Traveling by bus or on foot, approximately 450 new St. Ambrose University students set forth to provide simultaneous volunteer service at 25 locations throughout the Quad Cities.
The kick-off event of St. Ambrose's Welcome Week for first-year and transfer students, "Urban Plunge," was Monday, Aug. 24, at sites such as: PUNCH Community Gardens, JB Young School, Gilda's Club and Project Renewal, (all of Davenport), ARC of the Quad Cities (Rock Island) and Casa De Los Ninos (Moline).
"Service is part of what it means to be an Ambrosian," said Father Chuck Adam, SAU chaplain. "With Urban Plunge we hope to strengthen our new student's commitment to the lifelong practice of service and social justice.""Urban Plunge" is one of many annual service activities and projects completed by St. Ambrose students. Last academic year students put in more than 83,000 hours of volunteer hours in a seven-month period. The cost of these hours of service to the community - if paid at minimum wage - would be $604,000!
