Tips on Graduate School

  • Talk with current graduate students and faculty. They may be able to advise you on what problems and schools best meet your needs.
  • Take a practice test and review the results. Go to Learning Express Library for practice tests provided by the St. Ambrose library. You will need to register for an account. Once you create an account, click on the college students tab to find graduate school test prep information.
  • Take the appropriate graduate test:
  • Send a letter of inquiry to the graduate schools that interest you.
  • Write a Statement of Purpose, if required, and submit an application to the selected school. This is usually a 1-2 page essay describing your appropriateness as a candidate for the program. It should include your academic ability, work experience and proof of your interest in the chosen field of study.
  • Most universities will require 2-4 letters of recommendation from former professors who can attest to your ability to successfully complete their graduate program. Sometimes a previous employer or individual from the field you are entering may be also be a resource for a recommendation letter.
  • An official transcript of all previous undergraduate and graduate coursework taken is usually required at the time of application.
  • Find out more about scholarships opportunities by contacting the financial aid office at the universities in which you are interested.
