From the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea and from Bethlehem through Jerusalem to Haifa, students will explore the cultural richness and diverse contemporary religions of the State of Israel where there is no legal separation of religion from the goverment. Students will investigate the contemporary meaning of religious identity, listen to religious devotees' personal narratives, visit ancient holy sites, observe religious practices, mine different religious values and beliefs, and ponder the religious experiences of the peoples of Israel and Palestine: the Druze of Golan and Galilee; the Samaritans of Holon and Mount Gerizim; the Jews of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and the settlements; the Christians of Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jerusalem; and the Muslims of Ramallah, al Khalil and Jerusalem. Special attention will be given to the variety within Jewish life, the heartbeat of Islam, and a selection of the indiginous Christian communities (their differences and similarities). Students will explore how such varied religions have survived, adapted and blossomed in the desert.
