Globalization: The Ripple Effect

Honors 101/102A

Have you ever had a glass of clean water to drink? Have you ever not had a glass of clean water to drink? How does the ability to drink a glass of clean water vary depending on where you live? How do you effectively persuade others to donate money to dig a well so that someone can have access to clean drinking water? How do bottled water companies persuade you to buy tap water in a bottle? How do you become a critical consumer of persuasive messages?

HON 101A explored water as a common denominator and global point of contention, using an interdisciplinary approach focusing on environmental literature, science and law.  SVLN 201B and HON 112A were integrated to provide an even wider range of disciplinary perspectives on globalization in the world. In the Spring of 2013, HON 102A analyzed a unique perspective on the art of persuasion by assessing the impact of globalization on marketing communications.

The Race to Equality

Honors 101/102B

Did the election of President Obama change the dynamics of race, gender and inequality in America? Where does prejudice come from? How do race, gender and inequality influence our politics, our perceptions and ineractions with others and the self? What can be done to address the adverse effects of inequality?

HON 101B analyzed how therories of philosophy and politics can be applied to analyzing the current state of American politics.  This course was integrated with SVLN 201B and HON 112B which provided an even wider range of disciplinary perspectives on inequality in society. In the Spring of 2013, HON 102B explored factors that drive inequality and the consequences of inequality, examining different philosophies and biopsychosocial bases of prejudice, sterotypes and discrimination.
