Dance Troupe from Sydney Olympics at Galvin
Oct. 28, 2001

St. Ambrose University will present Bangarra Aboriginal Dance Theatre in "Corro Boree", an Aboriginal dance festival, on Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Galvin Center, St. Ambrose University.

Bangarra Dance Theatre is one of the youngest and the oldest of Australia's dance companies. Its living traditions go back at least 40,000 years with the indigenous people of Australia, the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. Yet they also reflect the lives and attitudes of indigenous people today. This American tour follows their participation in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Breaking new ground, Bangarra fuses the traditional aspect of Aboriginal and Islander life with contemporary movement. The result is an electrifying new style of dance, completely innovative and authentically Australian. Most of the fourteen performers are Aboriginal or Torres Straits Islanders who bring their personal heritage into the creative process. Rich in artistic talent, the company has become a community where ideas and traditions are exchanged, experimented upon and integrated together.

Bangarra commissions original choreography, music and lyrics, sets, lighting and costumes for its repertoire. Artistic Director Stephen Page serves as the company's principal choreographer. He was the Director of the Indigenous segment of the Opening Ceremonies for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games at which Bangarra performed, showcasing the company before an enormous worldwide audience. Award-winning composer David Page successfully mixes sacred chants, traditional rhythms and electronic urban sounds to create a spiritual feast for the ears. The traditional dances and songs featured in Bangarra's work originate from the cultural library of the Munyarryun clan from Arnhemland. Djakapurra Munyarryun, the family's representative, dances with Bangarra and also provides major creative and cultural input into the repertoire.

Prices for the performance are $15 for adults, $12 for faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $10 for students. SAU students with current valid student ID are free.
