St. Ambrose Offers Holiday Camp for Baseball Players
Head coach Jim Callahan and members of the St.
Ambrose baseball team will offer a three-day winter baseball camp for boys and
girls ages of 6-12. The camp will be from 8:00am – 11:00am on Dec. 29 and 30th
in Lee Lohman Arena on the St. Ambrose campus. The final day of the camp will be
from 8:00am -10:00am in the OS Sports Bubble located on Brady Street in

Bees Announce Spring Break Dates.
The Bees will be defending there 2008 Warner Southern University Invitational
title March 5-7, 2009. "This invitational tournament in central Florida
will test our team early and help us prepare for our conference play." said new
pitching coach Jason Belk. This Warner Southern Invitational has been a
true NAIA Pre-Season Showcase for the NAIA National Tournament.
The entire trip will run from March 4, 2009 to March 11, 2009 with the 4th and
11th being travel days. The team will be staying in Haines City, Florida
and flying out of the Moline International Airport. Times and dates will
be posted as soon as they are made available.
St. Anthony's Thanksgiving Baskets
The Baseball team will be helping put together and delivering Hundreds of
Thanksgiving Baskets to those who have less for the upcoming holiday on this
Saturday November 22, 2008. "It is just another way that we as a team can
give back to our SAU community and hopefully put a warm smile on some ones
face this holiday season." said outfielder Eric Roberts.
Fall Black and Blue World Series.
Due to the cold weather and field conditions, Game one will be postponed and
played on Tuesday October 28, 2008 at 3:15 pm. Game two will be played
Wednesday Oct. 29 and a game three will be played on Thursday Oct. 30. (if
necessary) Game times will be at 3:15 pm
Service Project to Cedar Rapids, IA. Opens Eyes.
The Baseball team went to Cedar Rapids, IA on Saturday October 25, 2008 with
John Deere Inc. and United Way to help in the Flood Relief Program that is still
much in the way and minds of many in Iowa. The team helped in the gutting
and cleaning of several homes in desperate need of attention. "Our team of
student-athletes took a day off from practice and personal time to dedicate
themselves to helping others, while working together as a team," said Head
Baseball Coach Jim Callahan.
"What an eye-opener it was for myself and I know the others on the team as
well," said Junior Dave Norkus. "For us to come and be able help
others in need, is just a great feeling for our team and myself.
"I really believe that helping others and doing this as a team, can only relay a
message that we are all in this together and that sometimes we all should take a
step back to really see how truly grateful and blessed we are on an everyday
basis." said Coach Jason Belk.
Brett Newsome has decided to skip his senior season and signed as a
free-agent with the Washington Nationals organization on Tuesday. Brett
reports to the Nationals rookie ball club on Sunday. "This is a dream come
true for me and I want to think everyone at St. Ambrose University that helped
me feel at home and allowed me to be successful both in the classroom and on the
field."

Post-Season Honors Announced
Daniel Cutler and Brett Newsome were announced to the NAIA Honorable
Mention All-American Team. Both Daniel and Brett were Pitcher and Player
of the Year in the MCC. While, Daniel Cutler was also named Regional
Pitcher of the Year.
Brunson Grothus, Ben Irmen, Kyle Matkaitis, Kyle Merten, and Kyle Roesler
were named to the NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes Team. The Bees 2008
season Team GPA was a 3.29.
Brett Newsome, Joey Martin, Kyle Roesler, Casey Raisbeck, Mark Gaulden,
Daniel Cutler were all named to the Midwest Collegiate Conference Team and All
Region VII team. Justin Mottet was also selected to the MCC team.
Bees roll on in Region VII Tournament
The Fighting Bees, fresh off eliminating St. Francis on Thursday
night, played the role of eliminator Friday morning.
The Fighting Bees knocked off Iowa Wesleyan 8-5, and will now meet St. Xavier
in the regional championship. The Bees are coming out of the double-elimination
bracket and will need to beat the Cougars this afternoon and tomorrow morning to
win the regional title.
The Bees, defending regional champs, would then come back to Davenport to
play in the Super Regional next weekend.
Bees roll on in Region VII Tournament
The Fighting Bees will
take good hitting better late than never. St. Ambrose escaped an opening round
scare in the NAIA Region VII tournament in Joliet, beating Judson, 9-3.
The No. 2-seeded Bees trailed
3-1 after the first inning and the score stayed that way until Tyler Fletcher
doubled in a run and later scored in the sixth to tie it up. The next inning the
first five Bees that came to the plate scored. Fletcher ended the game 2-for-4
with a pair of doubles and a couple RBIs, and 9-hole hitter Sean Murphy was
2-for-3.
MCC Pitcher of the Year Danny Cutler pitched a complete game, getting out of
several tough spots, striking out eight batters along the way while only walking
two. Cutler threw more than 130 pitches to get the win, and never allowed a
runner past second after the fourth inning.
The Bees will play this
afternoon in the regional semifinal against St. Xavier. In the opening game of
the tournament, the No. 1 seed, St. Francis, fell to Iowa Wesleyan.
Joey Martin named MCC Player of the
Week.
Senior infielder Joey Martin was named MCC Player of the Week for his great
defensive plays and for swinging a hot stick. Joey went 10-19 with 10
RBI's, 10 run scored, 2 doubles and a 3-run homer and grand slam.
Bees win 19 straight conference games to claim the
title.
With the sweep over Grand View College, 2-0 and 19-10, the Bees captured the
MCC title for the second time in as many years. "Winning back-to-back
titles is a great high right now for our team right now, even more so for us
seniors. This is what we wanted to do all year long, and thank you to
everyone who has supported us." stated senior catcher Mark Gaulden.
Daniel Cutler collected the win in game one by throwing a 3-hit shutout.
While Klye Merten singled home the only RBI of the game. Brett Newsome
scored on a pass ball for the Bees first run.
In the night cap, Casey Raisbeck dropped a 382 ft. home run to get the Bees
on the scoreboard first. Grand View score six runs in the next three
innings to take a 6-4 lead. In the 7 run 6th inning, Tyler Fletcher's 501
ft. grand slam home run put the finishing touches on the title for the Bees.
"I just made a nice easy swing and made solid contact. I just want to help
the team out in anyway I can." Said Tyler Fletcher
The Bees won 19 straight conference games to claim the title with a 21-3
conference record and 31-10 overall on the 2008 season. This will give the
Bees the number two seed in next weeks Region VII Tournament to be held in
Joliet, IL. (More information will come at a later date.)
Bees set school-records with 31 runs and 8 homeruns.
In a scheduled nine inning conference game against Iowa Wesleyan University
on April 23, 2008, the Bees set two school records for most runs (31)and home
runs (8) in a single game.
Senior Joey Martin went 4-6 with a 3-run homer, grand slam and 7 rbi's on the
day. But junior Ben Irmen also had a great day at the plate, going 3-4
with a double, 389 ft. grand slam and 6 rbi's. "I really felt it in BP
today, that if I got the right pitch, that I am going to hit it out today." said
Ben Irmen on his first collegiate home run. "I want to give some credit to my
assistant coach Tony Huntley, for the great BP he throws to us each day to get
us ready."
Senior Kyle Roesler also had a very interesting day at the plate as well. Not
only did Kyle make all three outs in the 10 run first inning, he went 4-6 with 2
home runs and 5 rbi's. And to top off the night, Junior Brett Newsome hit
a 366 ft. catcher's interference home run.
The victory allowed the Bees to remain tied with William Penn for the
MCC lead. William Penn will play Grand View College on Friday for their
last conference game. While your Bees will travel to Clarke College both
Saturday and Sunday for a three game set and finish up conference play on next
Tuesday against Grand View College.
Daniel Cutler named MCC and Region VII Pitcher of the
Week.
Daniel Cutler went 2-0 with allowing 9 hits, 11 strikeouts, 4 walks and 0
runs in 15 innings of work on the week. A 6 inning win over Waldorf
College and a complete game shutout victory over Viterbo University earn him
both MCC and Regional Pitcher of the Week.
Nice weather does in the Bees against the Saints.
The Bees get swept by the 14th ranked University of St. Francis Saints, on
one the most beautiful days of this 2008 season. "The bats never came
alive today with that big clutch hit, pitching was ok and defense was fairly
good, but they were not all working together and that is what you need to win
ball games. said Sr. outfielder Casey Raisbeck.
Bees on roll after winning eight straight
In a double-header against Ashford University, the Fighting Bees took game
one from AU in five inning, 12-0. They did that thanks to a Joey Martin walk off
grand slam that went more than 400 feet.
Martin was 3-for-4 on the game with four RBIs, while Casey Raisbeck went
2-for-3 with a trio of RBIs as well.
In the second game, despite five errors and four runs in the top of the
seventh, the Fighting Bees still dispatched the Saints 10-5. Justin Mottet
picked up his 4th win of the season giving up no runs in his five innings of
work.
Brett Newsome went 3-for-4, with three doubles, two RBIs and four runs
scored. Raisbeck also had a pair of doubles on a windy afternoon and scored
twice. Kyle Roesler drove in four runs in the second game as well, although he
went 0-for-3.
SAU sweeps Iowa Wesleyan, up to 3rd in MCC
Even with moving the start time back twice, the Bees came out swinging in
game one. Knocking the ball all around the field to score 8 runs on 14

Good pitching, good defense, timely hitting, a three-run homer and two, two
RBI doubles that leads to nine runs in the first two innings was just how
assistant coach Sean Johnson scripted.
Mark Gaulden hit a three-run homer in the first inning to get the Bees
buzzing in the dugout. "I knew he was going to throw me a fastball in and
I put a good swing on it and then had mother nature help it go with the wind."
Said starting catcher Mark Gaulden. Ben Irmen also had two hit three RBI
day, right along Brett Newsome's clutch two RBI base hit and Tyler Fletcher's
two RBI double. Daniel Cutler went six and a third innings to pick-up his
4th victory of the year. The Bees are 15-8 and 5-3 in the MCC
The Bees are taking one game at a time, right now in conference play.
"We need to play more, and become more consistent in our play here in the next
two weeks. said Head Coach Jim Callahan. "With the combination of colder
weather, Easter and our bye weekend, we just have not played enough baseball to
be consistent.
Bees game against Grand View has been Cancelled.
This is no April fools joke, today's game has been cancelled and no make-up
date has been announced as of yet. The Bees next game will be Thursday
April 3, 2008 on the road at St. Xavier University. Game one scheduled
start time is 1 pm with game two starting 20 - 30 minutes after game one.
Bees win 12-3 on Sunday to take conference series .
With a 12-3 victory this afternoon, the Bees win the MCC weekend series over
the Mustangs of Mt. Mercy College. This moves the B-0ees to 14-6 over-all
and 4-3 in conference.
The Bees next game is scheduled at home on Tuesday April 1, 2008
against MCC conference rival Grand View College. First pitch is scheduled
for 1:07 pm. The first 1000 people with valid id will receive a SAU
baseball pocket schedule.
Bees split with Mt. Mercy
Daniel Cutler threw a complete game, to pick up the 7-1 victory against the
Mustangs of Mt. Mercy College. But the Mustangs stole game two, by scoring
five runs with two outs in the top half of the seventh inning to earn a 5-3
victory and MCC conference split.
Bees pick up second conference win
Back to .500 in the conference (2-2) with a 12 run and 14 hit day
against Ashford University.
Bees out hit William Penn for first conference win
After dropping two conference games to William Penn on Holy Thursday, the
Bees out hit the Statesmen to salvage game three of the three game conference
set.
The Bees are now 11-5 over-all and 1-2 in the MCC. Next game will be
Wednesday March 26, 2008 against Ashford University in Clinton, IA. Game
time is set for 2 pm.
Bees sweep Lindenwood, ranked tops in Region VII
After a weekend sweep of the Lions, the Fighting Bees are ranked No. 1 in
NAIA Region VII.
The Bees had to travel to St. Louis to play the two games, but won
impressively in game one, 2-1, thanks to great pitching performances and two
timely hits.
MCC Player of the week
Brett Newsome was named this week's player of the week in the Midwest
Collegiate Conference. On the 9-game Florida trip, Newsome went 18-31 with 5
doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 20 RBIs. During the 8-day trip Newsome had a
hit in each game, including four game-tying or game-winning hits. 2008 Warner Southern Invite Tournament Champions
The Fighting Bees capped off a 9-game week with a 11-1, 5 inning victory over
Thomas University (GA) to capture the Warner Southern Invitational. Going
4-1 in the invitational with victories over #5 Spring Arbor, #11 Bellevue,
Walsh, Thomas, and its only loss coming to Bethel University (IN). The
Bees also beat Warner Southern two out of three and ten-run ruled Embry-Riddle
in Daytona Beach, FL. to finish the week 7-2 overall.

2008 Schedule has been posted.
The Fighting Bees will be playing one of the toughest schedules in the NAIA
in 2008. Ranked
21st in the preseason polls, the Bees will open the 2008 baseball season in February with a
four game set in St. Charles, MO. against 14th-ranked Lindenwood
University.
This 2008 Spring Trip to Orlando, FL. will begin a second test for the Bees
in the first week of March; Playing 10 games in 7 days against some of the
NAIA's top teams. The Fighting Bees will be playing Warner Southern
University, preseason ranked 28th, in a three game set to start the week.
They will then barnstorm over to Daytona Beach, FL. to play preseason ranked
15th Embry-Riddle in one nine-inning game. Wrapping up the week in
the Warner Southern University Invitational, the Fighting Bees will take on
national power and preseason ranked 4th Bellevue University and collide with
last years super-regional match-up, preseason ranked 3rd and 2007 National
Championship runner-up, Spring Arbor University. Other teams in the
tournament are 2007 World Series qualifier Walsh University, Thomas University
(GA), and Sienna Heights University (MI).
The Bees will also play Division I opponent Western Illinois University and
Regional opponents St. Xavier University and University of St. Francis as a part
of their non-conference schedule.
