Cabaret Update

04/03/2018

people rehearsingThe cast and crew of Cabaret have been in rehearsal since February, putting in countless hours and working together to create an entertaining and shockingly relevant show.

"The set is coming along nicely," explained stage manager and senior Zack Lawson.

The two-level set, designed by Kris Eitrheim, is complete with mylar curtains and a spiral staircase and transforms Allaert Auditorium into the infamous Kit Kat Klub. Luckily for actors and designers alike, "this will be the first show that I've had the set up and walkable with more than two weeks to go before opening," Eitrheim said.

"We have all but one song completely choreographed, and even in that, we only have to work the ending," Lawson said about rehearsals. "I've never laughed as hard or often at rehearsals before."

Lawson also described his pride in working with this cast in particular. "I have never worked with such a dedicated cast before. I've had dedicated individuals, but I have never had an entire cast mesh so well."

"Cabaret is such a wonderful piece of art," said Keegan Harry, who is making his first appearance at SAU in Cabaret. "Its compelling storyline and music are very powerful."

Harry is currently a high school senior, who will be attending SAU in the fall. "I have loved every minute of the experience, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to be in the show under such great direction and to be with so many amazingly talented students," he expressed. "Everyone is so personable and fun to work with, and I am so glad to be part of this show."

While the cast and crew are sharing laughs and building a strong sense of ensemble in rehearsals, the story they will share with audiences is dark and still relevant, even to today.

The show's numerous dance numbers and catchy songs are sure to sell tickets, but Lawson adds, "Hopefully people enjoy the show and its raucous songs, but will still take our director's vision away from the performances as well."

Cabaret runs April 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 22 at 3 p.m. Tickets are available online. We'd love to have you join us!

People need to see this show because it reflects our current political climate. The characters in Cabaret are being willfully ignorant of their political climate and it comes back to haunt them.
