Expanded Menu of Winterim Courses

10/26/2020

The menu of winterim courses available to undergraduates at St. Ambrose University has more than tripled this academic year to give students every opportunity to meet their graduation goals.

Previous Winter Break offerings included about six courses. For January 2021, students have 22 to choose from, all of which will be delivered in an online asynchronous format.

University Registrar Dan Zeimet said expanding the number of courses was very intentional. "We are mindful that the pandemic had an impact on our students, and the opportunity to take a winterim course may help them make up a class they had to miss due to absence this past spring or fall and get back on track. We want to help all students continue their progress toward a degree."

The winterim term begins Jan. 4 and ends on Jan. 22. Zeimet said the pace is intense, which is why students are limited to one course. Most of those offered are three credit hours and two – Information Literacy and Wellness Concepts – are one credit.

Zeimet said the university also is mindful of any potential financial impact to students and made an adjustment in their favor. Undergraduates who do not exceed 21 total credits hours between winterim and spring semester will incur no additional tuition expenses. Previously, the limit was 18 credit hours. To qualify for the exception, three of the 21 credit hours must be earned in the winterim term.

Undergraduates who will exceed 18 credit hours between the winterim term and spring semester need to submit a petition to the Office of the Registrar. Permission may be granted if the student is in good academic standing, earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in their last semester of recorded college work, and have a satisfactory reason for exceeding 18 credit hours. Undergraduates who do not meet the criteria can submit a letter of support from their advisor.

All winterim courses are posted in self-service and undergraduates can register at the same time they do for the spring semester: seniors on Nov. 4, juniors on Nov. 5, sophomores on Nov. 9, and first-year students on Nov. 10.

Questions can be directed to the Office of the Registrar.
