Multicultural Week Schedule of Events

Saturday, March 29

Freeman Pollard Scholarship Day
9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Rogalski Center Ballroom
Fall 2008 first – year and transfer undergraduate minority students are encouraged to learn more about this scholarship and opportunities at St. Ambrose. Dr. Pollard was a St. Ambrose political science professor and civil rights activist. Sponsored by the Admissions Office.


Sunday, March 30

Diversity Festival
Noon–6 p.m., Rogalski Center
An afternoon of cultural diversity fun for families and people of all ages, this international celebration will include music and dance demonstrations, food from around the world, children’s activities and crafts, martial arts, international displays, and much more. Adults, $2; SAU students and children age 12 and under will be admitted for FREE! Sponsored by BeeGlobal.

Multicultural Week Mass
6:30 p.m., Christ the King Chapel
All are welcome at this celebration of diversity and multiculturalism.The Mass will include performances and interpretation of hymns from different cultures. Sponsored by Campus Ministry.


Monday, March 31

Cultural Wear Day
Wear something multicultural on this day. Look around campus to see and identify different attire from many different international cultures.

Brown Bag Presentation– “Not the Ugly American: How to happily live, work and adjust to life overseas”
11:15 a.m. – 1 p.m., Gottlieb Lounge
Come join in the discussion as a group of U.S. Americans share their experiences living and working in a foreign culture, including living overseas as a dependent youth, a student, and a working professional. Learn what helps and what hinders adjustment to life overseas. Sponsored by Student Activities.

Spanish Open House: “Semester in the Andes on the Road” with Emily Chesser
4–6 p.m., Spanish House, 2138 Gaines Street
Spanish House residents open the door to share their experience of living in the first-ever language house on campus. Don’t miss out on Emily Chesser’s presentation about her study abroad experience in Ecuador. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by Student Activities, Residence Life and the Languages Department.

The Fashion Show
7–9 p.m., Rogalski Center Ballroom
"The Fashion Show” will feature SAU students and faculty modeling multicultural attire and the latest American trends. The SAU Hip-Hop Club will perform at the fashion show intermission. Sponsored by Minority Affairs Community Action and Student Activities.

Irish Social Dance with Dr. Gwin

Brown Bag Presentation -The Cultural Conundrum:
“How an expatriate American overcomes cultural barriers and stereotypes while living and working in Madrid, Spain”

Noon–1 p.m., Gottlieb Lounge
Heather Pederson, a Midwesterner at heart, will share her experience spearheading the multinational project Serve the City (Sirve a la Ciudad), which brought together organizations and individuals interested in serving the needs of the poor in Madrid, Spain. Sponsored by the Career Center

“A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer”
7:30–9:30 pm, Rogalski Center Ballroom
Readings about violence against women—funny, angry, tragic and beautiful—will create a true and profound portrait of this issue's effect on all people. Intended for mature audiences. Admission is $8 for adults; $5 for students. All proceeds will benefit local agencies working to stop violence against women. Sponsored by the Women Studies Honor Society

Brown Bag Presentation – “Living in the U.S. is easy, isn’t it?”

Look at the U.S. culture through the eyes of those who have come here from other countries. Students, faculty and professionals will share their experiences learning to live with and understand American norms and expectations. Sponsored by Student Activities

Film Fest: “Billy Elliot”
10:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., Library Media Room
Against the will of his father, young Billy Elliot exchanges his boxing gloves for ballet slippers. When he gets the chance to audition for the Royal Ballet School he must decide whether or not he can defy his macho father's wishes. This historical drama is set in England during the tumultuous miners' strike of 1984. Sponsored by the SAU Library and Minority Affairs

Storytelling: Beverly Heintz
4–4:30 p.m., Library Atrium
Davenport storyteller Beverly Heintz will perform a multicultural creation story about "how the earth and man came to be." Sponsored by the SAU Library and Minority Affairs

Wednesday Night Mass

Students will celebrate a multicultural Mass, followed by fun and fellowship. Sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Student Government Association


Thursday, April 3

Film Fest: “Mad Hot Ballroom,” with an introduction by President Joan Lescinski, CSJ

An inspiring documentary follows 11-year-olds from three schools in the toughest and most culturally diverse neighborhoods in New York City as they overcome awkwardness with the opposite sex, a lack of self-confidence, and pressures within their environment. Sponsored by the SAU Library and Minority Affairs

Incognito “One Man = Race, Diversity, Identity”
8–10 p.m., Rogalski Center Ballroom
Written and performed by Michael Fosberg, this solo theatrical presentation explores race, diversity, identity, family history – and finding a father. Sponsored by CAB and Student Activities


Friday, April 4

Film Fest: “Shall We Dance”
10:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., Library Media Room
Set in modern-day Japan, a middle-aged businessman with a wife and teenaged daughter is smitten by a dance instructor. To get close to the elusive woman, he signs up for a beginner’s dance class and becomes quite adept in the art of waltz. English subtitles. Sponsored by the SAU Library and Minority Affairs

Multicultural Week Lunch
11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Cosgrove Hall dining room
Join us for an international feast of cuisine from around the world. There is no extra cost for students with a meal plan; cost for faculty, staff and others is $6.50. Sponsored by Sodexho


Saturday, April 5

Cheesecake Connection
5:30 p.m., front lawn of the St. Ambrose Library
Enjoy cheesecake on the front lawn in front of the St. Ambrose Library and make. Donations will be accepted to benefit ECHOPP, a non-profit microcredit organization, providing small loans,education, hope, and support for women's initiatives in Togo and Benin, West Africa. Sponsored by Residence Life
