When Anne Frank received a diary for her 13th birthday,
she had no idea her writing would come to symbolize the
triumph of the human spirit to people throughout the
world.
Ballet Quad Cities will present the world premiere of
"From the Pages of a Young Girl's Life (The Anne Frank
Story)" on Tuesday, May 24 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in
Allaert Auditorium at St. Ambrose University's Galvin Fine
Arts Center. The ballet is choreographed by Johanne
Jakehelln.
Drawing from relationships with the people around her as
she passes from a child to young woman, one is touched by
the humanity of her story. Ballet Quad Cities'
interpretation of Anne Frank's story, in episodic form
with multimedia effects, dances off the pages to music by
Jewish composers such as Jacob Weinberg, Samuel Gardner
and Alexander Gretchaninov, among others.
The ballet is being presented in conjunction with "Beyond
the Holocaust: Lessons for Today," which includes a
traveling exhibit and other related programming created to
counter indifference, prejudice and racism, as well as to
promote the dignity, democratic beliefs and human rights
that are critical in our diverse society today.
"The ballet focuses on Anne's amazing spirit and strength,
her passing from childhood to a young woman and her
relationships with the people around her," says Joedy
Cook, executive director of Ballet Quad Cities.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for
children. For tickets, contact the Augustana College Box
Office at 309/794-7306.
Ballet Quad Cities will present a special matinee at a
reduced price of $2 for area school students on Tuesday,
May 24 at 10 a.m.. A limited number of school enrichment
programs will be presented at schools before the
performance, and an educators guide will be available for
all teachers who attend the performance.
