For the second consecutive year, a St. Ambrose student has won the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) William Wasson Award, and in its inaugural effort, the intramural basketball team won the Team Sportsmanship Award in the State of Illinois Extramural Basketball tournament.
Junior Jay Swenson, a sport management major from Dubuque, Iowa, is the second student in two years to earn the prestigious NIRSA award for exemplary work and leadership in campus recreation. Swenson is one of only 24 college students nationwide to receive this special recognition.
To be nominated, students must satisfy GPA, service, leadership and volunteering requirements, and play an active role in promoting recreational events on campus.
SAU Director of Campus Recreation Andy Milton says Swenson is dependable, has fresh ideas, and is passionate about campus recreation.
“Jay takes on different responsibilities and supervisory roles with maturity and leadership,” Milton says. “His ideas for new programs and his knack for finding ways to improve existing program offerings make him an excellent resource for our department.”
