Pre-Engineering
and Physics Scholarships Available at St. Ambrose and
Eastern Iowa Community College District
posted: Nov. 13, 2004 By
2006, there will be a need locally for approximately 6,000
replacement and new employees with advanced technical
training in engineering and physics. Women and minorities
continue to be underrepresented in engineering-related
fields.
The Sciences,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion
Program, or STEP, at St. Ambrose University and Eastern Iowa
Community College District (Clinton, Muscatine and Scott
Community Colleges) is addressing these issues by providing
pre-engineering and physics scholarships
with an emphasis on recruitment of women and minorities. In
addition to the scholarships, retention programs with peer
and professional mentoring, tutoring and learning
communities are also available.
The STEP
scholarships are funded through a special grant from the
National Science Foundation.
Students who
attend any of the three EICCD colleges, or who enter St.
Ambrose’s Industrial Engineering, Pre-Engineering or
Physics programs, either from high school or by
transferring, are eligible for scholarships. The funds could
potentially reduce a student’s educational debt by as much
as $4,800 at EICCD over a two-year period. Students who
attend or transfer to SAU could see a potential reduction in
educational expenses of $3,000 per year. Students do not
have to transfer to SAU to be eligible for funding at the
community colleges.
Scholarship
criteria for first-year students:
-
ACT math score
of at least 21
-
high school GPA
of 3.0 or above
-
at least a B-
in high school math and science
-
applicants of
an underrepresented race or gender or underserved
populations are particularly encouraged to apply
