Acoustic
Chamber Group Tin Hat Quartet to Perform at Galvin
posted: Dec. 9, 2004
Forging
a new acoustic sound that defies categorization while
striking universal emotional chords, Tin Hat Quartet
(formerly the Tin Hat Trio) brings
freewheeling chamber music sound to the Galvin Fine Arts
Center as part of the 2004/05 Performing Arts Series. The
group will perform in Allaert Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on
Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005.
Hailed by the New York Press for the way
it "mines a rare middle ground with a subtly insurgent
slant" by "interweaving Old World Europe with
postmodern America, south-of-the-border sensuality with
concert-hall propriety, and odd-metered syncopation with
deeply soulful grooves," Tin Hat stands poised on
the cusp of an original American ethnic music of its own
devise.
Featuring Rob Burger on accordion, piano,
pump organ, harmonica, marxophone, Carla Kihlstedt on violin
and viola, and Mark Orton on guitar, dobro, and banjo, Tin
Hat is an acoustic chamber group that combines
intriguing and challenging compositions with a striking
command of tone and texture, and a playfully spontaneous
approach to improvisation.
After garnering widespread critical
acclaim for 1999's Memory is an Elephant, 2000's Helium, and
2002's The Rodeo Eroded, the trio recently released their
fourth album, Book of Silk.
Tickets
for the concert are $12 for adults, $10 for faculty, staff,
alumni and senior citizens, $8 for students, $7 for groups,
SAU students with current valid student ID are free. Tickets
can be reserved online, or by calling 563/333-6251.
