Unmanaged conflict can lead to low morale, low productivity, and increased stress. This results in inefficient and ineffective organizations. Conflict can be handled in such a way as to improve operations and strategy.

This workshop will show the participant how to harness conflict to find new, different, and better ways of working.

Learning Outcomes:
• Understand why conflict exists in our culture and in our organizations
• Understand the types of conflict and the levels at which conflict occurs
• Consider the value of competition versus conflict
• Consider and learn how to implement conflict management techniques
• Consider the key aspects of negotiation (accommodation, pressing, avoidance, negotiation, and collaboration)
• Understand the sources of conflict in our own organizations and develop a strategy to deal with specific areas of conflict

Strategic Leadership

As the pace of change quickens and the world becomes a busier place, it is easy to get consumed by day-to-day crises. This workshop explores a very interactive process for stepping back and planning strategically for the future of your organization.

Based on the book, Strategic Planning: An Interactive Process for Leaders.

Learning Outcomes:
• Gain insight into the need for and benefits of strategic planning
• Learn the eight steps for leading your organization through strategic planning
• Conduct a strategic planning process for a generic organization
• Practice some of the interactive processes used in strategic planning
• Consider what steps your organization needs to take to plan strategically
• Apply your new insights to your own work situation

Leadership Communication

Take this single course or as a Core Course for the Certificate in Leadership

Focus on communication issues in organizations. Examines theories and models of communication and the skills necessary for a leader to effectively communicate within the organization. Internal communication issues, strategies for effective communication, and issues surrounding new communication technologies are explored.

Learning Outcomes are to develop:
• a critical understanding of the traits, behaviors, and actions of good leadership
• a critical understanding of trait, behavioral, and contingency based leadership theories
• an understanding of how and what motivates people
• an understanding of how to modify leadership styles regarding people's different motivation styles
• an understanding of motivational myths
• a strategy for identifying de-motivators in the workplace and eliminating de-motivating factors

Decision Making

Take as a single course or as an elective for the Certificate in Leadership

Every person constantly makes decisions. Some are minor, some are modest but important because they are repetitive, and some are major with unique characteristics and critical consequences. Clearly it is important that all decisions be made consistently well. This course explores the major theories, concepts and practices of good decision-making. We will look at the basic models of how to make decisions more effectively, the many traps and barriers that hinder good decision-making, and a variety of proven techniques for improving decisions. The main focus will be on individual decisions, but we will explore group and organizational decision making as well.

Each participant should come to class with a two to three page description of a decision was made in the past that did not turn out the way you expected. It can be drawn from your job/professional life or your personal life. It is important that you use a proper decision since we will be spending most of the class analyzing why the decision yield the results you were expecting.

Learning Outcomes:
• Describe and explain the major concepts, theories and models that relate to effective individual decision-making in the organizational setting.
• Describe and explain the important inherent, psychological, behavioral processes that impede or prevent good decision-making.
• Identify and apply a variety of techniques for improving personal decision-making.
• Design and apply actions and policies to improve group and organizational decision-making.
• Describe how good decision-making relates to effective leadership in organizations

Leadership Essentials

Take as a single course or as a Core Course for the Certificate in Leadership

It is said that good leadership is essential to successful organizations. This two-part session will cover the traits, behaviors, and actions of a good leader by delving into the theories of leadership and having the participants assess their own leadership styles and traits. The session will also examine theories of motivation, the outcome of which is to develop within each learner an awareness of what truly motivates the people in their workplace.

Additionally, participants will also take the Leadership Practices Inventory® (LPI) 360-degree assessment instrument, which is the best-selling and most trusted leadership tool of its generation. Developed by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, the LPI approaches leadership as a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors. This tool helps individuals and organizations measure their leadership competencies, while guiding them through the process of applying Kouzes and Posner's acclaimed Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model to real-life organizational challenges.

Leading and Managing Change

Change and the rate of change are more dynamic today than ever. This workshop examines the human side of change - an area that many not only avoid, but also do not consider in their transition plans. This course will provide a clearer understanding of how change can impact people, organizations, and the end result. This workshop will provide insights on how to minimize the stress and interruptions due to new initiatives.

Learning Outcomes:
• Recognize the reason for change
• Recognize the impact of change on people
• Learn how to deal with resistance to change
• Understand the cultural aspects within an organization for change

Servant Leadership

Take as a single course or as an elective for the Certificate in Leadership

The world desperately needs leadership and a new model for that leadership. Leaders are needed in businesses, government, churches and all types of organizations. This workshop is based on the presenter's two books on servant leadership. The goal is to develop leaders who recognize the importance of serving while also leading.

Learning Outcomes:
• Un-learn some of the popular notions of leadership and servant leadership
• Re-learn that leadership involves a voluntary and interactive relationship
• Understand that leadership deals with change
• Consider how adding the word "servant" to "leadership" adds to our understanding
• Apply this new understanding to your work situation
• Learn practical skills to utilize back in your workplace

Building Effective Teams

Take as a single course or as an elective for the Certificate in Leadership

This session will explore the theory and practice of group and team development. Participants will gain a basic understanding of team development within organizations and how and when to develop high-performance teams. Special emphasis will be on developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities to facilitate groups and teams. A connection will be drawn between team building, communication, and leadership.

Whether it is a project team or a work team, group dynamics can be complicated. Members must come together, address work issues, assign tasks and roles, and learn to become a high performing team. This workshop will examine issues and develop strategies for team building within your organization.

Fundamentals of Fund Raising

Take as a single course or as a course for the Non-Profit Leadership Certificate

Designed for non-profit executives and board members who do not have primary responsibility for fundraising for their organization, this course provides an overview of the philosophy and standard practices of effective fundraising so that executives and boards can successfully support their frontline fundraising staff.

It will provide an overview of different fundraising techniques as well as ways to create a culture of philanthropy within your organization and work effectively with your fundraising staff.
