Triota, the Women and Gender Studies Honor Society at St. Ambrose, recently won the Yours for Year grant from the Junior League of the Quad Cities.

Each year the Junior League chooses one community group to assist with both funds (up to $12,000) and volunteer support.

Triota's mission is to promote gender-sensitive solutions to human rights problems, and to educate the SAU campus and larger community about issues of diversity and justice. This mission helped the organization win the Yours for Year grant.

"Triota was chosen in large part because the organization's focus and projects support the Junior League of the Quad Cities' I AM Initiative," said Courtney Wilson, JLQC Community Vice President. "I AM emphasizes our commitment to improving the perception and self-image of women through leadership and empowerment to inspire change."

Junior League members will assist Triota members with programs throughout the year related to raising awareness about gender-based violence and pay equity. The two societies have already partnered to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault with The Clothesline Project held earlier this month.

"Future volunteer opportunities and projects will include a benefit performance of Eve Ensler's I am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Lives of Girls Around to World, a Self-Care Fair with activities to encourage women to take time for self-care, and a salary negotiation workshop for women," Wilson added.

Junior League of the Quad Cities is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. In the past two years, Junior League members have provided more than 3,250 hours of volunteer service and have invested more than $81,500 in the Quad Cities community.
