Fresh Faces Dazzle During Night of Performances

11/07/2019

On October 18, the Theatre Appreciation Club held the annual Fresh Face Revue.

This event takes place every fall semester to showcase the talents of all the new first-year and transfer students!

This opportunity is unique because a student director is in charge of each act. These directors consist of older SAU students who have successfully passed the directing course (THTR 312) at Ambrose. These veteran theatre students help give new students fresh ideas and insights into various methods of performing. The fresh faces perform various scenes, monologues, and musical theatre pieces for an evening filled to the brim with theatre.

This time around, the Fresh Face Revue had its first girl-power group number. All the women banded together to sing and dance to "Candy Store" from Heathers: The Musical. The number was choreographed by Theatre Appreciation Club president Luke Peterson. After the amazing performance by these talented women, it seems as though the concept of a group number will be implemented in the future.

After the curtain closed on the group number, the showcase continued with a scene from Beyond Therapy, performed by first years Amber Cook and David Meyer. The scene brilliantly portrayed a very awkward blind date that does not go well.

Next up was first year Katie Link who showed off her singing and acting chops with "I'm Not Afraid of Anything" from Songs for a New World. Following Link was transfer student Niki DeWitt, who gave a wonderful performance of "A Change in Me" from Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

After DeWitt sang her final note, the night took a short break from musical theatre as first year Alexis Schliepp took the stage to deliver a monologue chronicling a teenage girl's desperate plea to fit in with the popular kids. The night then returned to music when first year Peyton Reese gave a beautiful yet heartbreaking rendition of "Safer" from the musical First Date. The night then took a more comedic turn with first year Quinnie Rodman's upbeat performance of "Right Hand Man" from Something Rotten!

Staying on the comedic side of things, first years Hailey Allbaugh and Cassandra Cook gave a hilarious performance of a scene from Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. Up next was Edwina Cummins, a foreign exchange student from Ireland, who sang a breathtaking performance of the Celtic Woman's "Send Me A Song."

First year Abby Ryan then took us on a journey with her performance of "Journey to the Past" from Anastasia. Afterward, first year Mary Rose Prosinski took the stage to deliver a powerful performance of "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar. First years Peyton Reese and Charles Murphy wrapped up the night on a funny note with their comic performance of "Serious" from Legally Blonde the Musical.

After the Revue's conclusion, performers and audience members gathered in the Galvin Fine Arts Center lobby to enjoy cookies and congratulate each other on a wonderful night of theatre. The Fresh Face Revue offers a wonderful opportunity for new students to get their feet wet and create lasting bonds with fellow department members.
