Why did you want to work in international education?

The experience I had studying in Mérida enriched my education beyond what I thought possible. From then on, I was constantly thinking of ways I could make my career internationally involved. I had been teaching in Illinois for a couple of years when I decided to move abroad again to improve my Spanish and gain some clarity on my career aspirations.

I spent the 2014-15 academic year living in Madrid, Spain, teaching English to 8- and 9-year-old students in the public school system. Seeing my students progress in a foreign language at such a young age was inspiring. Through extensive travel and my experiences teaching, I knew that an internationally focused career in education was exactly what I wanted. It is a great privilege to work in this field, and an honor that I am able to do it at St. Ambrose!

What's your favorite destination?

My favorite place that I have traveled to is the Sahara desert near Merzouga, Morocco. Nothing can compare to the camel ride through the gorgeous dunes of the Sahara during sunset out to our campsite. After enjoying a traditional tagine dinner cooked over an open fire, we played hand drums, sang, and laughed into the night. I had never seen the stars so brilliantly and vividly. Surreal would be the best word to describe this experience, but it only begins to describe the magnificence that is Morocco.
