Senior Spotlight - Hannah Donovan

11/02/2017

Graduating a year early, senior Hannah Donovan has had a jam-packed three years at St. Ambrose University. From stage manager to scenic charge, she's done almost every tech job under the sun, and she doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon. Luckily, she took a break to be interviewed for this month's Senior Spotlight!

Hometown: Nomadic World (aka Everywhere!)

Major/Minor: Theatre Major with an Art Minor

When did you first become involved in theatre?
It was my sophomore year of high school. My theatre department was so unorganized, and I knew I could make it better.

What originally brought you to St. Ambrose?
The faculty. They were all very personable and welcoming. When I called the university the first time, Cory picked up and decided to interview me on the spot, over the phone, and I was like "Oh, okay. This is happening."

What was your favorite production to work on? What about your favorite painting project?
My favorite production was The Tempest because it was so challenging for me. My favorite projects I've done were the paintings for The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley.

"The St. Ambrose Theatre Department offers a well-rounded education. If you want to only act, or only do sound, you can, but there are many opportunities to branch out and try different aspects. I've come out of the program filling every tech position besides scenic designer, and I think that's really cool."

Because you're graduating early, do you have any advice for students who want to get ahead?
First, I came in with a bunch of credits from AP classes, so that helped a lot; but I would say don't shy away from the 18 credit load. I had 18 credit hours almost every semester, and it is very doable. Also, consistently check with your advisor to make sure you're staying on track.

What's next after graduation?
I am currently applying for stage management internships. This semester I have already started working out in the community. Right now, I am the stage manager for Almost, Maine at the QC Theatre Workshop. I'm just going to keep trying to make a name for myself and follow wherever theatre will take me.

For prospective students reading this article, why do you think they should study theatre at St. Ambrose?
I think the St. Ambrose Theatre Department offers a well-rounded education. If you want to only act, or only do sound, you can, but there are many opportunities to branch out and try different aspects. I've come out of the program filling every tech position besides scenic designer, and I think that's really cool.

Any final words?
When studying theatre, I think it's very important not to get stuck in your "go-to" job. If you usually act, try being a soundboard op, or lighting designer. It's crucial to understand all aspects of the world you're getting yourself into, and at St. Ambrose, you have an abundance of opportunities, so take advantage of them.

It is safe to say that Hannah will be truly missed in the department next year. We wish her the best as she goes on to do great things! We here at SAU know that her talent and skill are going to open many doors for her, and we hope that with all her success, she remembers to come back and visit the place where it all started and her SAU theatre family.
