Dancing For Joy

The coach of the first national championship team in St. Ambrose history feels very much like a member of the SAU athletic team.

Unlike at Florida State, where she was a competitive dancer as a college undergrad, second-year dance coach Danelle Stanger '06 MBA said dancing not only is listed as a varsity sport at St. Ambrose. It is supported like one as well.

"We get huge support from our athletic department," she said.

Stanger's 17-woman squad won congratulations from across campus after collecting the NAIA Large Dance division championship of the NCA-NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships in Daytona, Fla., in April.

Members of the title-winning troupe were seniors Katie Arp and Kayla Wills; juniors Laurel Whitford, Lauren Philiotis and Stefanie Rocknowski; sophomores Heather Sturtz, Kayelyn Geurink, Kirstin Marriott, Miranda McKenna and Rachel Molsberry; and first-year students Amber Yaddof, Katelyn McDonald, Alison Baskerville, Alli Burke, Megan Willard, Tonya Boots and Jessica Frye.
