Before he launches a shot as a St. Ambrose Fighting Bee, first-year student Pedro Lopez will represent his native Puerto Rico in Federation of International Basketball Associations' Men's Under 18 3-on-3 World Championships in September. 

Lopez is one of four players from his native island selected by his to represent Puerto Rico by its national federation. The 32-team event will be held Sept. 27-29 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Lopez and fellow Puerto Rican Francisco Hernandez will vie for Fighting Bees roster spots when Coach Ray Shovlain's club opens practice in October.

"We think he's a great young man and a quality person," Shovlain said of Perez. "He has obviously had great success in Puerto Rico and we look forward to having him be part of our program."

  • All 18 eligible SAU teams were named NAIA Scholar Teams for the past academic year in July. That tied for second most among NAIA member institutions. The men's cross country team had the highest cumulative GPA among cross country teams and the 10th highest among all NAIA member teams in any sport.
  • The Fighting Bee Golf Classic, postponed due to wet conditions in May, will be held on Sept. 6 at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport. Contact Wendy Pondell at 563-333-6053 to inquire about openings in the event. An 11 a.m. shotgun start will be followed by a steak dinner at Rookies Sports Bar in Davenport.
  • The Fighting Bees football team will open play on Sept. 14 vs. Taylor University at Brady Street Stadium in Davenport. Coach Mike Magistrelli's team returns 15 starters from a 9-2 team that advanced to the NAIA playoffs last season. Quarterback Eric Williamson and linebacker Jeremy Wallace have been selected as preseason All-Americans for the Bees, who are ranked 11th in the nation in NAIA preseason poll.
  • The women's cross country team is picked to win the Midwest Collegiate Conference behind six returning runners from last year's MCC champs. The men's cross country team is ranked second behind Grand View. Both open the season on Aug. 30 at Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf, Iowa, with the St. Ambrose Fall Opener.
  • Both the men's soccer and women's soccer teams are picked to finish third in the MCC. The men's squad officially will open the season Aug. 28 at Trinity Lutheran. The women will visit Midland on Aug. 27.
  • Led by junior Academic All-American Luke Staudt, the men's golf squad will open the fall portion of its season at the UW-Gren Bay Invitational Sept. 8-10.  Senior Abby Frideres, a returning all-MCC Tourney team pick, will lead the women's golf squad into action at the Aug. 30-31 Mount Mercy Invitational.
  • The women's tennis team will open play Aug. 24 at the Byrnes Doubles Tournament in Waterloo, Iowa. They will host Cardinal Stritch in Davenport on Aug. 25.
  • The women's volleyball squad is picked fourth in the league. They launched their season on Aug. 23.
  • For a second straight year, a St. Ambrose team won the corporate relay challenge of the Battle Up Brady, a prelude to the Quad-City Times Bix 7 road race. This year's team consisted of Shannon Turzczyn, Marcus Simpao, Joe Appah and John Darmody.
