Three political science students participated in the 2013 Summer Research Institute. Dr. Joe Hebert led the political science group which focused on "Virtue and Democratic Leadership in Shakespeare's Coriolanus."

Each student wrote and presented a research paper:

• Jordon Williams, "Factionalism in Shakespeare's Coriolanus"
• Matthew Abbot, "From Vice to Virtue: An Analysis of the Character of Coriolanus"
• Joe Dillon, "Virtue in Education: The Importance of a Virtuous Education in Shakespeare's Coriolanus"

Two students delivered papers at the annual Iowa Association of Political Scientists in March 2014 at Central College in Pella, Iowa. Joe Dillon presented "An In-Depth Analysis of 9/11: Diving Into the Complex Issues at the Heart of Terrorism" and Christopher Hollis presented "U.S. Embassy Bombings in Kenya and Tanzania and Al Qaeda's Jihad on the Western World."

Funding for students attending and presenting papers at academic conferences is sponsored by the Frank and Jane Folwell Endowment in Political Science and Pre-Law Studies.
