Preparing for KCACTF 2015

12/04/2014

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

The snow is falling, students are stressing, and Galvin is all a buzz with preparations for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF).

KCACTF is a festival showcasing the nation's most talented collegiate theatre students, and Ambrose certainly has enough to go around. This year, a group of Bees will travel to Minnesota in January to show their skills in the District V round. St. Ambrose will be well represented, with students competing for the Irene Ryan scholarship, singing in the Musical Theatre Intensive, competing in technical theatre, and showing off their improvisational chops in Devised Theatre.

Those competing for the coveted Irene Ryan scholarship have already been selected by a KCACTF adjudicator from a mainstage production. The two nominees from each show must select a partner and prepare two scenes and a monologue or song. Junior Jordan McGinnis, nominated for his performance in Working, talks about his process from picking his partner, junior Amelia Fischer and the stress that comes from finding the right piece.

"The scenes are a hard choice, because they have to be perfect. It's ALL about the scenes; you could have the two greatest actors alive but if the scenes aren't good they aren't going anywhere," Jordan said. "With that in mind, I've picked one scene about four times. I went from Angels in America, to Eurydice, back to Angels in America before finally deciding on 'Hey #3/Perfect for you reprise,' which is a song I will sing with Amelia."

The Musical Theatre Intensive is a fairly new event, and this will be the second year St. Ambrose will participate. Last year McGinnis, senior Stacy Phipps, and senior Chris Galvan performed a piece from The Wild Party and advanced to the next round. This year sophomore Kelci Eaton and senior Alexis Greene will comprise one group and McGinnis, Fischer, Galvan and senior Brooke Schelly also will compete in the event, showing their theatrical chops and blend together singing and acting.

Devised Theatre showcases how a group of students can build a story from just one line. They receive a prompt and then perform what they've prepared. This year's devised group includes sophomore Rachael Pribulsky, Greene, Schelly, Galvan, and senior Paige Allen.

The Technical team will compete for the coveted Golden Crescent Wrench award. This year's SAU Tech Team includes: junior Amanda Zweibohmer, sophomore Jackson Green, sophomore Allie Stecklein, and senior Robbie Poston.

Good luck to them!
