TRANSFER FACTS

• Students must apply and be admitted to SAU for general admission. Students are advised to apply a year in advance of the term they wish to transfer. Apply to SAU online
• The student should send the SAU Admissions Office a transcript for each term completed after submitting their application.
• The student must have a minimum grade of "C" to be in "good standing" for admission purposes.
• CLEP and Advanced Placement credit are subject to review for credit at SAU on an individual basis. Send these scores at the time you request a transcript be sent to SAU.
• A student who earns an AA or AS degree from BHC will be admitted to SAU as a junior. In order for students to graduate from BHC in the Business or Accounting Transfer curriculums, they must complete MATH 132 and MATH 228. SAU does not require these courses.
• The student can achieve a certain degree of specialization by selecting one of the different majors listed: Accounting, Economics, Finance, General Business, Management and Organizations, Marketing, or International Business.
• For students transferring with 30 semester hours or fewer, it is strongly recommended that BHC coursework include MATH 112 or 131; ECON 221 or 222, all of which would serve as prerequisites for business courses at SAU.
• Students earning the AA degree from BHC should reference the AA/AS Degree Planning Worksheet for appropriate course selection.
• Students planning to transfer prior to completion of the AA/AS at BHC, should reference SAU general education requirements.
• A maximum of 64 community college credits will be applied toward the minimum of 120 credits required for SAU graduation.

+Either BIOL 251 or BIOL 201 satisfies the diversity requirement for the B.S. in Biology.

Chemistry Note:
SAU requires Organic Chemistry I for a B.S. in Biology. Biology majors are strongly advised to discuss their transfer and career goals with advisors and faculty at both institutions to meet the application requirements for graduate programs including medical schools. These advanced programs may also require Organic Chemistry II and/or Biochemistry. Organic Chemistry II is offered at SAU and BHC. If taking Organic Chemistry I and II, complete both courses at the same institution. SAU's Biochemistry is CHEM 319; BHC's CHEM 111 Principles of Organic Biochemistry transfers to SAU as a Chemistry Elective.
(FYI: The Biology B.A. degree at SAU does not require Organic Chemistry I; seek advising for an alternate course.)

Nursing

TRANSFER FACTS

Students wishing to enter the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) major (pre-licensure) at SAU after completing the Associate in Science (AS) degree at Black Hawk College should complete the courses below. For transfer students completing the AS degree at BHC, the BSN can be completed in two years of full-time study after transfer.

To be accepted to the nursing major students must:

1.     Complete an admissions application to SAU and complete a separate admissions application to the Department of Nursing. For fall admission, the application deadline is December 1 of the previous year, and for spring admission, the application deadline is July 1 of the previous year. See admission and degree details on the Nursing FAQ page.
2.     Have a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students with a GPA lower than 3.0 may submit a letter of petition to the Admission and Progression Committee explaining the circumstances related to the GPA and may be admitted on probation. Admission is very competitive.
3.     Complete prerequisite course requirements with a "C" grade or higher.
4.     Complete a CNA (certified nursing assistant) course and hold active status on a state registry.
5.     Complete Healthcare Provider CPR (American Heart Association).
6.     Upon acceptance, initiate certified background check process.

The SAU Nursing Department does not require any formal entrance testing at this time (i.e. TEAS, HESI).

CNA Course Availability:  BHC offers the Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program twice each fall and spring semester, and some summers. The course is NA 100 (8 credit hours).  Please consult BHC's semester schedules for course availability.

Foreign Language Note:  SAU requires three years of the same language in high school or the equivalent of two semesters at the college level. Sign language may meet this requirement. Foreign language at the 202 level or above will meet a humanities requirement at Black Hawk College.

Pre-OT

St. Ambrose University currently admits 36 qualified students into the OTD program each fall.

  • The OTD program is a 3-year post-baccalaureate program, which includes coursework, fieldwork, and internships
  • Baccalaureate degree: All students admitted into the program must have their baccalaureate degree completed by June 1st, before intended start in the OTD program in August. Students may select their baccalaureate degree of choice.
  • Transfer students from Blackhawk Community College must apply for admission to St. Ambrose University. A separate application to the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program is required in the fall of senior year. Students must be admitted to the University as well as the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. Admission to St. Ambrose University does not guarantee advancement into the graduate level OTD program.
  • Students who plan to condense their undergraduate education into 3 years are encouraged to contact the OT department at ot@sau.edu at the start of their college career or earlier, to obtain advising on coursework.
  • Prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher. Prerequisite GPA must meet a minimum of a 3.0. Grades for all prerequisite coursework must be available by the application deadline of December 1st. In most cases, that means all prerequisite coursework will need to be completed by the end of the junior year.

Application should include:

a.     Three letters of recommendation are required. One of the letters of recommendation must be from an OT where observation hours were completed.
b.     Official GRE score. Submit directly to OTCAS with program code 7811. Information on the GRE is available at http://www.ets.org/gre
c.     Written personal statement

2. Submit supplemental materials directly to Rhonda Lane in the OT department at SAU. Supplemental materials include documentation of 50 hours of observation with an occupational therapist, in at least 2 different sites (e.g., pediatrics and inpatient rehabilitation). Pre-PT

TRANSFER FACTS

  • St. Ambrose University admits up to 36 qualified students into the DPT program each fall; however, 15 of these spots are filled by students given a conditional admittance to the DPT program as high school seniors meeting TRACK I requirements.
  • TRACK II entry to the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is available to qualified St. Ambrose students during the senior year. Students on this track are able to complete program requirements on a 3+2.5 plan of study. The first year of DPT courses is applied toward completion of the undergraduate degree.  Admission to the program on this track requires a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA, however a higher GPA is recommended due to the keen competition for admission.
  • TRACK III entry is available to students holding a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Students on this track complete requirements on a 4+2.5 plan of study.
  • Due to the number of required courses, it is not recommended that students attempt to complete the AA/AS degree at Black Hawk College and all DPT prerequisites. Students who wish to take courses at BHC in addition to DPT prerequisites prior to transfer to SAU should reference BHC AA/AS degree requirements or SAU general education requirements. It is also advisable to consult with an SAU advisor for course selection.
  • All prerequisites must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. Any major is acceptable; however, the pre-professional course prerequisites must be completed. Many students have found that they are most efficiently able to complete program prerequisites in a Psychology, Biology or Exercise Science major.
  • TRACKS II and III DPT program admission also requires: 50 hours of documented observation with licensed physical therapists in two or more physical therapy settings including inpatient and outpatient; submission of official results of the Graduate Record Exam; official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended; two references from individuals well acquainted with the applicant; and an on-site personal interview with PT faculty members.
  • TRACKS II and III applications to the program are submitted online through the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS)
  • TRACKS II and III application deadlines are on the DPT Application and Admission page.
  • The DPT is accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association.
