A First Step for Two Old Partners

10/03/2016

A combined marching band played the school songs of St. Ambrose University and Assumption High School on Sept. 30 at the St. Vincent Athletics Complex, sounding the "opening notes" on a new day in athletics for the two longtime partners in Catholic, Diocesan education.

On Homecoming Weekend for both schools, SAU and Assumption officially dedicated the first phase of the Complex, which consists of two combination soccer/lacrosse/football field turfs and a state-of-the-art softball diamond.

The Most Rev. Martin Amos, bishop of the Diocese of Davenport, joined with Sister Joan Lescinski, CSJ, PhD, president of St. Ambrose, and Andy Craig, president of Assumption, to bless and dedicate the new athletics fields, which will be followed in time by a track and a football field and stadium complex.

The facilities will provide athletes from both schools first-class facilities on which to play and practice.

"That's what's really neat for our athletes and for the athletes of Assumption," said Mike Poster '88, vice president for finance at St. Ambrose and a former football standout at both Davenport schools. "For years we haven't had proper athletic facilities for our use. Our athletes have had to travel all over Davenport and the Quad Cities to get the kind of facilities that they need. Now they are right next to campus, right next to Assumption High School."
