Did you happen to catch the opening number for the telecast of the 70th Annual Tony Awards hosted by James Cordon on Sunday, June 12?
Lot of talent on that stage — including Mr. Corden.
Lot of talent backstage as well — including our very own Brian Hemesath, a 1994 St. Ambrose Theatre graduate.
A two-time winner and five-time Emmy Award nominee for his work on Sesame Street, Hemesath designed the costumes for that very impressive opening production to the Tony Awards, which were televised live on the CBS television network. He has also been chief costume designer for Saturday Night Live and several movies and has branched out to Broadway.
Hemesath didn't win a Tony on Sunday, but don't be surprised if the show's opening number doesn't merit some Emmy consideration.
In response to a post Tony Awards e-mail, Hemesath said his SAU-to-Broadway story certainly helped him identify with the opening production's This Could Be You theme.
"I was texting with Brian during the Tony's," said Corinne Johnson, PhD, an SAU Theatre professor. "I thought he knocked it out of the park! Brian remains a good friend and is so inspirational to us due to his incredible talent AND his amazing humanity. He is exemplary in his commitment to his art and in his generosity of spirit."
