First-year Focus: Haley Rhoads

05/02/2018

Haley Rhoads is a growing asset to the St. Ambrose Theatre department. She has helped bring multiple shows to life in different forms. Haley was brought into our children's show Cinderella as the choreographer and created wonderful dance numbers. She also volunteered to help with the props design for Cabaret. Haley is also one of the founding members and officers of the newly-created Theatre Appreciation Club.

We're excited to see what Haley will bring to the department in the future!

Where are you from?
I grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, and I graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.

What is your major? Why did you pick that majors?
I am a secondary education and mathematics major. For a long time I thought I would be a doctor, but I ultimately found that I had a passion for teaching/helping others. I decided to be a teacher because I felt it would be the best career for me.

When did you start doing theatre? Why did you decide to continue doing it at Ambrose?
I started theatre in middle school and then continued it all throughout high school. I was heavily involved in theatre, whether performing or helping crew while in high school and it was a good way for me to meet people, and express my creativity. I wanted to continue at St. Ambrose because it was something I really enjoyed.

What would your dream role(s) be?
I think if I could pick a dream role from any classic show it would be Maria in the Sound of Music, or Grace in Annie simply for the dance scene. If I could pick any role from a current show, I would probably choose Heidi or Zoey from Dear Evan Hansen!

What are some theatre productions you have been with involved in the past? And what do you hope to be involved with in the future?
In middle school I was involved with Oliver, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Once Upon a Mattress. In high school I was involved with Spamalot, Curtains, Les Miserables, Matilda, and Mr. Morris Lessmore and his Fantastic Flying Books. I also helped with crew/performed in other productions such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Moon Over Buffalo, and more.

Q: Why did you choose St. Ambrose? A: I chose St. Ambrose because I knew that I wanted a smaller school so I could actually get to know my professors. Plus I liked the campus, and it was not too far from home.

What is your favorite theatrical show and Why?

I'm a huge Shonda Rhimes fan, so I love Scandal and Grey's Anatomy. They convince me I know how to perform surgeries, or solve crimes.

What would your dream job be?
I'm currently in school to become a high school math teacher, because that's something I'm really passionate about. However, if I could choose any career regardless of my abilities, I would probably be a travel photographer, because I could travel the world and document it!

What is your favorite class this semester?
I was a dancer for almost my whole life, and this semester I took Zumba as a class for my kinesiology credit. It was so much fun, and gave me a new hobby!

Tell us a Fun Fact about yourself!
A weird fun fact about me is that I am deathly afraid of Poptarts. I don't like them to be anywhere near me, and I don't even like to see them. I'm not sure where the fear came from, but I hate them!
