On Tuesday, September 24, St. Ambrose University welcomed two notable guests to campus.
Leading the Nation Caucus Forum with Pete Buttigieg
Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg brought his campaign to the Quad Cities to participate in a forum sponsored by the Quad-City Times, St. Ambrose University and the Quad-Cities Chamber of Commerce.
Called "Leading the Nation - Iowa 2020," the forum series features remarks by the candidate, a panel discussion involving local reporters and The Buzz journalist Carly Miller, Junior. Buttigieg also took questions from the audience.
Originally planned for the Beehive in Ambrose Hall, the forum was moved to Lee Lohman Arena in anticipation of a large crowd. More than 1,000 people attended.
16th Annual Women for Social Justice Conference Keynote Address by Leymah Gbowee
Also Tuesday at St. Ambrose, 2011 Nobel Prize winner Leymah Gbowee provided the keynote address for the 16th annual Ambrose Women for Social Justice Conference. Gbowee won the 2011 Nobel prize for leading the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, which ended a civil war in 2003.
Ms. Gbowee spoke at 2 p.m. in the ballroom of the Rogalski Center which was free and open to the public. The conference speaker was also part of the College of Arts and Sciences Project Series on War and Peace.
"We are pleased to host these two significant events at St. Ambrose. These events can allow both our students and the public to hear a Nobel Prize winner speak to the causes of peace and social justice, as well as to experience the American electoral process in action," said Sister Joan Lescinski, CSJ, PhD, president of St. Ambrose.
St. Ambrose University does not endorse any political party, its platform or its candidates. Rather, the University is a place where civil and respectful debate about the issues before us can take place. Such open debate can be useful to all citizens of goodwill.
