ALS Claims SAU Football Great

Toughness was a prevailing theme of Bob Jurevitz's record-setting St. Ambrose football career from 1982-1985.

"He was tough as nails," former Bees teammate Dan Burich said. "And he played like he was."

Jurevitz also lived like he was tough. And Saturday, he died that way.

Diagnosed in October of 2010 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or ALS, Jurevitz, 48, was in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday night to see his son Keaton score his first touchdown in the final game of his high school career. The Bettendorf Bulldogs lost 17-14 to West Des Moines Dowling in the Iowa Class 4A state championship game.

Friends had said for months that Bob Jurevitz was hanging on to see his second son's final high school game.

Bob Jurevitz still holds SAU records for career touchdowns (64) and points (414) and his career rushing yardage record last a decade. He led the nation with 27 touchdowns in 1985 and that remains and SAU record.
