Cast Attends High Tea

03/08/2014

The Galvin mainstage presents The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.

The Theatre Department is honored and thrilled to have Broadway director, Phil McKinley, join the cast as a guest actor. Some of his work includes Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark and The Boy From Oz (starring Hugh Jackman). McKinley will portray the role of Lady Bracknell.

This rousing, romantic escapade dishes up scathing social satire, effervescent wit and high farce, making it one of the most cherished plays in the English language. In a stylish send-up of Victorian courtship and manners, charming bachelors Jack and Algernon lead double lives to woo two young ladies who have won their hearts. When they are caught in their lies, the stage is set for clever manipulations and hilarious confusion.

The cast attended a "High Tea" as one of their rehearsals. They were told to wear the fanciest clothes they owned and use their best table manners. Director Corinne Johnson acted as hostess for the night by serving the cast tea, muffins, and scones. After the tea ended, the actors were assessed on their behavior and etiquette during the meal and learned the appropriate behavior of the upper crust English society. It was a very fun, unique way to learn about the time period (late 1800s) during which the play takes place.
