Students Win Midwest American College of Sports Medicine Quiz Bowl

St. Ambrose's Kinesiology Quiz Bowl team recently took first place by a large margin at the Midwest American College of Sports Medicine regional meeting. The three-member team, consisting of Amy Marszalek, Kevin Wendling and Laura Moorman, competed against 15 other teams in the jeopardy-style quiz bowl competition, and beat out such larger schools as Iowa State University, Ohio State University and Michigan State University.

Doing well at the ACSM regional meeting is not unusual for St. Ambrose.

"Going into the competition, I knew St. Ambrose had done well every year they had participated, so I felt pressure to do well," said Marszalek. "I was nervous to compete in front of everyone, but I knew we were well prepared and that we would do our best and see how it went."

Categories included exercise prescription, anatomy, EKG interpretation, metabolism, cardiovascular physiology and neuromuscular physiology.

"One specific question I won't forget being asked was, 'What is the name of the process that converts glycogen to glucose-1-phosphate?'" said Moorman. "The answer was glycogenolysis and I wrote it immediately, but I kept second guessing myself because it was worth a lot of points."

This indecisiveness didn't have much of an effect on SAU's scores, as the team ended up winning the first round of play and remained tied for first place with Iowa State after double jeopardy.

"At this point, we were all nervous because we didn't know how risky we wanted to be with the final jeopardy question," Wendling disclosed. "We decided to risk it all, and we got the last answer right and Iowa State missed it, so we ended up winning by a rather large margin."

In May, the SAU team will travel to sunny San Diego, Calif., to represent the Midwest Region at the American College of Sports Medicine's national championship.
