The Galvin mainstage presents The Laramie Project this month, a play written by Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theater Project.
The basis of The Laramie Project surrounds a horrific act in October, 1998. Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. He wasn't found until the next day, and he died in an area hospital several days later. Shepard was assaulted because he was gay.
Following the trial of the two men accused of killing Shepard, the Tectonic Theater Project made several trips to Laramie. They conducted more than 200 interviews with Laramie townspeople, chronicling the life of the town in the hate crime's aftermath.
Since it's premiere in 2000, The Laramie Project has become one of the most-performed plays in America.
