Among the 680 candidates for St. Ambrose degrees on Saturday were 15 students from seven foreign countries as well as the US territory of Puerto Rico.
Tuan Nguyen, who graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance, came to St. Ambrose from Hanoi, Vietnam, and his family made the journey from their homeland to celebrate the big day. They were among several international families in attendance.
"This is very special for our family," said Tuan's mother, Yen. "We are very proud."
Tuan was among 11 international undergraduates and four graduate students. Saudi Arabia led among countries gaining Ambrosians on Saturday, but also represented was Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, Nigeria and Syria.
Tuan transferred to St. Ambrose after having first studied at a larger school in Dallas, where he was among a larger group of students from Vietnam. He said he was able to learn English better at St. Ambrose, simply as a matter of necessity, and particularly treasured the opportunity to participate in an Antioch Retreat, "my first college experience related to religion."
He plans to join a recent contingent of St. Ambrose graduates from China and work in Los Angeles.
