Up Next: "Proof" by David Auburn

The next show of the St. Ambrose University Theatre Department season is the Studio Theater show, Proof, by David Auburn. Directed by senior K. Hampton, this will be her chance to present yet another facet of her theatre skillset.

"Proof is the story of Catherine and her journey of dealing with the death of her father, Robert," explains Hampton. "She is both haunted by his mathematical genius and the madness that started deteriorating his mind. She then finds comfort in Hal, a fellow mathematician and a previous mentee of her father. However, when Catherine gives Hal the key to the drawer that holds a groundbreaking mathematical proof, he not only does not believe that she wrote it, but her sister, Claire begins to think Catherine is developing the same mental decay that their father went through."

When asked why she chose this script Hampton said "Proof has been my favorite show since I started my journey here at St. Ambrose, and my first experience on the Allaert stage was performing a scene from this script with Andrés Garcia for our Fresh Face Revue in 2018."

In fact, Hampton and Garcia will be coming back full circle because Garcia will be the Stage Manager for this production.

"When looking at scripts I knew I wanted to do a show that portrayed women in a role other than a cookie-cutter housewife," Hampton said when asked what excited her about this script. "Both of the women in the script are working women who are exceedingly smart. I wanted the women to not be controlled by a relationship but by their dreams and their ambition, and while their relationships are important, it does not define their characters."

Hampton is also looking forward to working with some new faces in the Theatre Department: First-year Maria Saucedo will be the costume designer and First-year Megan Rohn will be the Assistant Stage Manager. She will also have some more seasoned theatre members on her design team. Senior Nyssa Wagner will be her props designer and Senior Becky Meissen will be the scenic designer.

Auditions for Proof were December 3.
