Thank you for taking the time to investigate our distinctive MSW program.
Here at St. Ambrose University we take pride in offering you a curriculum – intentionally designed by dedicated faculty – that is focused on the future of social work and how students will best learn these knowledge, skills, and values. This means that our primary concern is you and the ways in which you will impact the social work profession.
Admission to the accredited St. Ambrose University School of Social Work means more than just earning a degree – it means joining forces with our community of activist-learners.
In the St. Ambrose School of Social Work, we understand that social work has always been a profession intentionally rooted in social justice, critical thinking, and action.
In the classroom, we take the time to challenge students with in-depth study of the best theories and practice skills available in order to develop the necessary competence and confidence to apply them in real-world practice. For instance, we use an observation lab with state-of-the art technology for honing the necessary interpersonal skills from family therapy to political action.
Our faculty and students are engaged in the community beyond the classroom and research lab. As evidence, recent student projects have significantly impacted the Quad Cities area by advocating major changes to Iowa drug court policies; organizing town hall meetings with citizens and legislators; and raising funds for non-profit organizations.
Additionally, capstone projects span a wide range of topics including: challenges for same-sex couples in adoption; trauma and mental health; PBIS in Schools; and trauma-informed residential treatment models.
Faculty are active scholars across multiple fields of practice ranging from disaster mental health; community organizing practices; wisdom in older adults; implicit racial-bias; mental health and substance abuse; and environmental social work.
We invite you to contact us for more information. Come and visit us, sit in on a class, talk with a faculty member or student, and learn first-hand what makes us stand out!
